***MEDIA ADVISORY***

THURSDAY, May 13, 2010

Assemblyman Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson), a member of the Assembly Minority Sex Offender Watch Task Force, has scheduled a public forum in Yorktown to focus on best practices and opportunities to further safeguard children from sex offenders. The task force recognizes that a comprehensive strategy must be implemented to better address the confinement and control of sexual predators throughout all stages of the criminal justice process and beyond. Assemblyman Ball will seek input from community leaders, law enforcement and service providers in a continuing effort to fight for state laws to provide for a safer New York.

The goal of this forum is to pull together professionals from law enforcement, education and victim advocacy groups to share information on the best practices for sex abuse prevention and sex offender monitoring.  The forum will also review the Minority Conference’s pertinent legislation.

The Town of Yorktown is in the process of enacting initial “Child Safety Zone” legislation.  “Child Safety Zone” laws prohibit certain registered sex offenders from residing or entering within a specified distance of schools, child care facilities or areas where children congregate.  The forum will also consider the implications of its passage and discuss how other municipalities can follow suit.
